Ford 8.8" swap almost done!

Post  Millertime21 on Wed Apr 09, 2008 10:16 am

Well Monday I started doing my 8.8" swap. For people unfamilair with this swap its becoming more and more popular. The reason people use this rear is because it basically a straight bolt in. And because its a very nice upgrade for cheap. I got mine out of a 99 ford explorer. My original rear was a 7.5" drum brake 3.42 open rear. I now have a 8.8" disc brake 4.10 open rear. They do come stock with posi, but I found this one cheap, close, and I plan on going with a locker so it wasn't to important to me. When I pulled out my old one and put it next to the 8.8" it looked like a baby rear end. All I have left are the brake lines. I Have to order a brake hose tomorrow and should have it all finished up by the weekend. Will have pics when its all done.

Cool project. Are you going to eventually put a sfa in the front? Cause that would be awesome then.

Yeah, I'm planning on a SFA. Going to use a d30 from a wrangler. I plan on useing the kit from 3leaffab.com if it comes out this summer. If not my neighbor is a welder and really big into lifted trucks so hopefully he can help me if the kit isn't here by Aug. Should have everything I need to finish it up tomorrow. Then pics Very Happy

You should weld the axel tubes to the diff housing. There is a chance that they could twist around there. Plus it makes the axle stronger.

^^^Yeah, I wanted to do that. Only problem is I don't have a welder and neither do any of my friends. As soon as I get access to one I'm sure I'll have it done.

Looks good. I like, to bad I don't have that kind of money or skills to do a job like that.

Its basically a straight bolt it, so it didn't take much knowledge or effort. Only difference was a new u-joint for the drive shaft, and new u-bolts for the leafs. As far as price it wasn't to bad. As always the little things add up. I bought the rear end complete for $200. But then after new brakes, fluids, gasket, it added up. All in all I think it was about $400. Which even though I didn't really need the added streth, if you did that would be a cheap upgrade.
